World of Warcraft, is it really WoW?

I know some of you have been playing World of Warcraft (WoW) in the betas, so I’d like to see some personal reviews of WoW from your perspective. I’ve seen many World of Warcraft screenshots and they hardly show anything that makes me even want to try the game. The graphics look very dated as the characters themselves along with the terrain look low-poly. Especially, when you compare WoW to other games, this looks like they’re using a 5 year old rendering engine.

I’ve heard some mention that was they style they were looking for, but I just don’t agree with that really. Warcraft 3 improved the graphics substantially over Warcraft 2, while still maintaining the look and feel of the WC universe. But, every screenshot I see, it looks like Warcraft 2 grade.

Ok, graphics aside, I heard gameplay is what makes WoW so good. Ok, fine… but, a little more experienced info on this along with maybe an explanation would be good to hear from some of you.

From what I heard so far, the “massive” has ony gotten close to 100. This is a bit lower compared to PlanetSide, which you can often find yourself fighting in a 200-300 player battle.

So, then we check out the World of Warcraft videos, and most of them that are released are cinematic trailers, which are so far from what the game really is, it’s pretty to watch, but really makes the actual game a bit disappointing. That’s ok, EQ2 is doing the same thing.

Unless someone can convince me otherwise, it seems that the “fun” part of WoW is just playing a PvP game within the World of Warcraft universe. When I factor in “massive” and graphics, I’d have to say that PlanetSide still wins. So, I’ll stick to PlanetSide for now, until another game comes along and proves it’s really better. Because, I just don’t see that at all with WoW.
